But the award was initially presented to La La Land by mistake.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the winners of the Oscars – the year’s top film awards. La La Land, a film about a jazz pianist who falls in love with a young actress in Los Angles, led the nominations. The movie was nominated in 14 categories, tying the record held by All About Eve (1950) and Titanic (1997). In early January, La La Land already set a record at the Golden Globes with seven awards in all categories it was nominated in. Damien Chazelle’s film also won five British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA), including the best picture prize.

La La Land won six out of 14 nominations, but the top prize went to Moonlight by Barry Jenkins. However, the La La Land team held the trophy in their hands, because actors Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, who announced the winner in the category, named Chazelle’s film as best picture. It was figured out during the celebrations on stage that Beatty had the wrong envelope and the real winner was Moonlight

Damien Chazelle was named best director. Emma Stone won the best actresses award. The best song prize was given to “City of Stars”. La La Land also received the best original score award. The season’s favourite also won Oscars for best cinematography and best production design.

Besides the top award, Moonlight also won Oscars for best adapted screenplay and best supporting actor (Mahershala Ali).

Casey Affleck was awarded as best actor for Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester by the Sea. Lonergan’s film also won the best original screenplay prize. The best supporting actor award was given to Viola Davis for Denzel Washington’s Fences.

The American 3D computer-animated film Zootopia was named best animated feature film. Iranian-French The Salesman directed by Asghar Farhadi won the best foreign language film award. The miniseries OJ: Made in America was named best documentary feature.

The 89th awards ceremony took place in Los Angeles on February 26. The full list of winners is available on the Oscars website.
