The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) announced winners of the annual awards.
Musical film La La Land, which dominated the Golden Globes and leads the nominations at the Oscars, was nominated in 11 categories and won five of them. The film was honoured as best picture and Damien Chazelle took the best director prize. La La Land’s Emma Stone won the leading actress statuette. The film was also awarded for cinematography and original music.
Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea) won the leading actor award. The film was also awarded for original screenplay. Lion received the adapted screenplay prize. Dev Patel (Lion) and Viola Davis (Fences) were awarded as best supporting actor and actress respectively. The statuette for film not in the English language went to Hungary’s Son of Saul directed by Laszlo Nemes and Gabor Sipos. Ken Loach’s brave social-realist drama I, Daniel Blake was named outstanding British film.
The 70th awards ceremony was held at London's Royal Albert Hall on February 12. Damien Chazelle’s La La Land competed for awards in 11 categories followed by Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi drama Arrival and Tom Ford’s psychological thriller Nocturnal Animals with nine nominations each. This year’s another hit, Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester by the Sea, had chances to win six nominations. The full list of winners and nominees is available on the BAFTA website.
