Damien Chazelle’s La La Land received record 14 nominations.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced nominees for this season’s main film award – the 89th Oscars. La La Land, a film about a jazz pianist who falls in love with a young actress in Los Angeles, leads the nominations with 14 nods, tying the record for the most Oscar nominations held by 1950's All About Eve and 1997's Titanic. La La Land already broke the record at the Golden Globe Awards earlier this January, picking up awards in all seven categories it was nominated in.
Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival, Denzel Washington’s Fences, Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge, David Mackenzie’s Hell or High Water, Theodore Melfi’s Hidden Figures, Garth Davis’s Lion, Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester by the Sea, Barry Jenkins’s Moonlight and the Golden Globes leader musical film La La Land by Damien Chazelle will compete in the Best Picture category.
Denis Villeneuve, Mel Gibson, Damien Chazelle, Kenneth Lonergan and Barry Jenkins are nominated for Best Director.
The Actress in a Leading Role category nominees are Isabelle Huppert (Elle), Natalie Portman (Jackie), Emma Stone (La La Land), Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins) and Ruth Negga (Loving). Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea), Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge), Ryan Gosling (La La Land), Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic) and Denzel Washington (Fences) will compete for the Actor in a Leading Role trophy.
Nominees in the categories for actresses and actors in supporting roles include Nicole Kidman (Lion), Viola Davis (Fences), Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea), Dev Patel (Lion), Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water).
La La Land, Manchester by the Sea, Hell or High Water, 20th Century Women and Lobster are nominated in the Original Screenplay category.
The award for Animated Feature Film may go to American action-adventure film Kubo and the Two Strings, Disney’s story about adventures of a Pacific princess Moana, French-Swiss animated drama My Life as a Zucchini, French-Japanese animated fantasy film The Red Turtle or American 3D computer-animated film Zootopia.
Iranian-French Salesman by Asghar Farhadi, German drama film Toni Erdmann by Maren Ade, Danish-German historical drama film Land of Mine by Martin Zandvliet, Australian romantic film Tanna by Bentley Dean and Martin Butler and Swedish comedy-drama film A Man Called Ove by Hannes Holm will compete for the Best Foreign Language Film trophy.
