Kyle MacLachlan appears as his iconic character.

A new teaser for the series was released a few days after Showtime had announced the premiere date for Twin Peaks season 3. The 30-second video shows a gloomy forest road, fog rising up above a mountain forest and leafless branches in a flashlight beam. The main detective in the mysterious story – FBI Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) – is also shown. He emerged from grim darkness and walks directly to the camera.

The previous teaser for the much-anticipated revival features another character of the first two seasons – Agent Gordon Cole played by Twin Peaks writer, director and producer David Lynch. His character, absorbed in thoughts, is eating a doughnut for 30 seconds. The welcome sign to the mysterious town is shown at the end of both teasers.

Twin Peaks season 3 will premiere on Showtime on May 21. Viewers will see two hour-long episodes. The next two episodes will be available online immediately after the premiere. The rest 14 episodes will be broadcast once a week during the following months.

The network’s president David Nevins said the new season was the “pure heroin version” of David Lynch. He earlier teased the fans, saying the director and he had watched the new season and assuring it would be “18 unforgettable hours”.

Twin Peaks was aired in 1990-1991 and gained huge popularity and achieved the iconic status. The first two seasons included 30 episodes. In 1992, David Lynch shot the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, a prequel to the series. Twin Peaks is often called one of the best series ever. For example, Rolling Stone recently included it into the top 20 best TV shows of all time.
