The cult classic film starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater will be made into series.

The popularity of series as a genre continues to grow with classic feature films often becoming their basis. Amazon announced its plans to shoot a series based on Martin Scorsese’s The Departed that won four Oscars. According to the latest news, iconic black comedy Heathers will also be turned into a TV series.

Michael Lehmann’s original 1988 film tells the story of A level student Veronica (Winona Ryder) struggling through the high school unfriendly social hierarchy and building relationships with her boyfriend J.D (Christian Slater). The story develops into violence and a murder.

The series will be directed by Leslye Headland, who is going to add some new motives to the characters and the plot. The story is set in our days, and the three Heathers, who were the most popular students in the original film, are turned into outcasts. Heather McNamara (originally played by Lisanne Falk) is now a black lesbian; Heather Duke (Shannen Doherty) is a male who identifies as gender-queer and Heather Chandler (Kim Walker) has serious overweight problems.

Leslye Headland said the movie had influenced an entire generation and shared her desire to introduce it to a new generation of teens.
