Twenty films, including new works by Mel Gibson, Emir Kusturica and Terrence Malick, will compete for the main prize.

The festival will be opened by Damien Chazelle’s La La Land about musicals in the United States. Other directors in the lineup are world’s renowned masters, such as Wim Wenders, Francois Ozon, Emir Kusturica, Terrence Malick and Mel Gibson. Only one of twenty films in the main competition was directed by a debutant – American actor and first-time director Christopher Murray with the film The Blind Christ.

Terrence Malick, whose film of 2011 The Tree of Life was recently included in the BBC’s top 10 films of the 21st century, will show his documentary Voyage of Time, starring Cate Blanchett. German filmmaker and president of the European Film Academy Wim Wenders will show The Beautiful Days of Aranjuez, featuring musician Nick Cave, which was shot in 3D. Fashion designer Tom Ford, who worked for Gucci before launching his own brand, will make his second attempt at the festival and bring the film Nocturnal Animals, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Amy Adams. In 2008, Colin Firth received the festival’s best actor award for his role in A Single Man, Tom Ford’s directorial debut. Mel Gibson comes back as a director with the military drama Hacksaw Ridge after a 10-year break.

It’s worth noting that the Venice Film Festival begins to pay more attention to documentaries. Two documentaries were selected for the main competition, and seven ones will be screened out of competition.

The world’s movie celebrities, such as Jude Law, Cate Blanchett, Ryan Gosling , Keanu Reeves , Emma Stone, Jim Carrey, Natalie Portman, Diane Keaton, are expected to attend the festival.

The Venice Film Festival is the oldest film festival in the world founded in August 1932 and held annually on the island of Lido in Venice. This year’s 73rd festival will run from August 31 to September 10.
