Stories by the author of the books and the script for Game of Thrones will be adapted for television by Universal Cable Productions.

The series will be based on Wild Cards stories that were published in the late 1980s—early 1990s as a series of anthologies about superheroes. Besides Martin, the series authors include other science fiction writers.

The news came from the writer himself, who announced on his blog that he had started working on a TV project. However, Martin doesn’t participate in the development personally, because he has an agreement with HBO, where Game of Throne is shown. The project will be executive produced by writer Melinda Snodgrass, a co-author of the Wild Cards concept.

It’s interesting to note that George Martin wrote a script in the 1990s for a feature film based on the book series, but nobody showed interest in the project. Now, when his Game of Thrones has become one of the most successful TV shows, the project gets its second chance and will be released as a series.
