An installation is located 20 metres from the Mexican border and points at possible sad consequences of the implementation of Donald Trump’s proposals on migration.
US presidential candidate Donald Trump promised to build a wall on the border with Mexico to stop illegal migration. Artists David Gleeson and Mary Mihelic responded to the statement by building a section of the wall near San Diego.
The wall constructed of 52 cinder blocks was installed 20 metres from the US-Mexican border. It is decorated with Trump’s portrait on the one side, decorated with wilting fruit, flowers, cleaning items and hardware. The wall is an artistic manifest of possible economic consequences of the radical restrictions of migration proposed by Trump.
The authors of the installation hope other artists will join the project and build their own sections of the wall. “Art has to be present more in these disruptive and contentious moments,” the New York Times quotes Gleeson.
With Trump’s promise to charge Mexico for the wall construction in mind, Gleeson and Mihelic sent Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto a bill of $14,635.42.
This is not the first time when David Gleeson and Mary Mihelic have been inspired by Donald Trump. In autumn, they bought Trump’s former campaign bus on the internet, replaced Trump’s slogan “Make America great again” with the surreal one “Make fruit punch great again” and began a tour across the country.

The artistic duo, also known as vt. Rutt t. Rutt Artst, says they have already spent about $30.000 of own funds on the project dedicated to the response to Trump’s campaign.
“Never did we think we’d be doing this until November, never,” Mary says. Bu Tnow they are committed: “As long as he’s in, we’re in,” she adds.
