The most vulnerable workers are freelancers, retail and front-desk workers and those who cannot work remotely

Museums, galleries and other cultural institutions across the US began to lay off workers after shutdowns, Artguide reports.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA) in Los Angeles laid off 97 of 185 employees who worked part-time. The Hammer Museum in Los Angeles also laid off 150 part-time student workers.

The Cleveland Museum of Art laid off all part-time workers and reduced salaries by 11-15% to preserve jobs. Museums take unpopular measures, while the US Congress considers the federal stimulus package.

The American Alliance of Museums says the allocated funds are not enough: it sought $4 billion in aid. Museums have to look for additional financing: the Metropolitan Museum is creating a $50 million emergency fund.
