The US Senate approved a $2 trillion financial assistance plan, of which $232.5 million is allocated for the arts and humanities, Artguide reports.
The National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities will receive $75 million each, which they can distribute how they wish. The Institute of Museum and Library Services will get $50 million.
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, will be given $25 million and $7.5 million, respectively.
The total sum for the arts is much lower $4 billion the American Alliance of Museums was seeking from Congress. AAM estimates that up to 30% of museums, mostly in rural areas, cannot reopen after the restrictions to curb the coronavirus spread were eased. With the plan adopted, cultural organisations will have the right to ask for a federal loan.
