The Senate of Berlin tries to soften to blow of the global crisis on small cultural organisations and creative workers, Artguide reports.

Cultural senator Klaus Lederer said: “Berlin is alive and great because of the commitment of its cultural workers in all sectors. The cancellation of countless cultural events will threaten the existence of many of them.”

The senate announced a €100 m grant programme for freelancers and small cultural organisations, including private galleries.

Freelancers includes 8,000 Berlin-based artists who can receive up to €5,000. The application process will be simplified to reduce the bureaucratic burden.

An additional €300 m of loans will be offered to the retail, hotel, restaurant and cultural industries. The grant and loan programme will be implemented in phases. The total sum of assistance may reach €600 m. Bavaria and Nordrhein-Westfalen consider similar measures.
