The government of Italy, where the death toll surpasses 2,500 people due to coronavirus, had to introduce quarantine in the country. Venice’s cultural heritage and environment are under threat due to cruise ships passing through the lagoon and rising water levels caused by mass tourism and pollution. Due to the mass quarantine, wildlife returns to Venice, the Art Newspaper reports.
Venice residents post images of birds and fish swimming in transparent water.
“Incredible images of the Rio dei Ferali, behind San Marco Square, [which is] usually murky. Nature reclaims its spaces,” a social media user wrote on Venezia Pulita’s Facebook page.
Other users post photos and videos of big fish swimming in a narrow canal, swans gliding through waterways and numerous birds on steps on Venetian houses. The lagoon near the Arsenale, where the Venice Biennale is held, has become bright blue.
One commentator notes how paradoxical the situation is when local residents, who have to stay at home, take photos of a clearer city from their windows: “When we are out of all of this, and maybe the clear water of the fish, you will miss the silence.”
