This could foster democratisation of the art market

While organisers cancel or shut down art fairs, art galleries turn to online viewing rooms, according to Artguide.

Most galleries across the US begin to sell art online, using own websites or Instagram, while curators organise online exhibitions.

Online platform Art Basel Online Viewing Rooms has been launched this week to help galleries that were going to present their works at Art Basel Hong Kong.

The virtual fair features 2,000 works with an estimated value of $270m, including 70 pieces over $1m each.

Experts believe online fairs could lead to the democratisation of the art market by removing the intimidation factor of walking into a gallery and by posting prices for artworks, which will have a positive impact on the opaque art market.
