The Grand Palais Éphémère will be built on the Champ de Mars near the Eiffel Tower in early 2021. The temporary structure is designed by Wilmotte & Associés, a bureau known for its architecture and exhibition projects, the Art Newspaper reports.
Constructed in 1900 for the World’s Fair, the Grand Palais needs renovation. The project costs €500 million. Work will begin in 2020.
Until recently, it has been unknown where numerous events – the Fiac fair, Paris Photo, La Biennale Paris, the Saut Hermès, the Chanel fashion shows and major artists’ retrospective exhibitions – will be held during the revamp. The temporary Grand Palais will also host interdisciplinary cultural and artistic events, curated by the Réunion des Musées Nationaux (RMN) together with UNESCO and the Musée du quai Branly.

Wilmotte & Associés architects designed a modular structure from sustainable materials that can be reused in multiple configurations.
The authors of the project highlight it was created in collaboration with the local community to minimise any disturbance to the residents. In particular, the building will have great sound insulation capabilities due to its double skin.

The total cost of the project, including the maintenance during four years and disassembling, is €40 million. The sum will be financed by tenants and the Organising Committee of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games – both Grand Palaises will host wrestling, judo, taekwondo and fencing competitions.
