Officials of German Cologne have long been trying to open a museum dedicated to 87-year-old Gerhard Richter. But the most famous German artist does not welcome the idea, Artguide reports.

Richter said in an interview with a German radio station that he does not need a dedicated space because his works are displayed worldwide. However, the local authorities think the museum should be opened because other German cities have the same plans.

The Richter name attracts tourists. In 2018, his exhibition in the Museum Barberini in Potsdam was attended by over 150,000 people. Richeter-designed stained glass window at the Cologne cathedral gathers crowds of tourists on any day of the week.

Though the city still needs Richter’s approval, the debate over how the museum should look like has already begun. Mayor Andreas Hupke says it must be a world-class institution in the league of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.
