He will address festival-goers and introduce the politically active US rappers.
The leader of the Labour Party was invited to appear on the main stage of the festival dubbed the British Woodstock. Jeremy Corbyn will speak to the crowd on Saturday June 24 before the performance by American rap duo Run the Jewels.
The politician was invited to appear at last year’s festival, but he had to cancel the visit due to the active campaign before the referendum on the UK’s membership in the European Union. This year, organisers expect Corbyn to get a warm reception from festival-goers. The Labour leader actively worked with the youth during the recent election campaign and gained support among young voters, the festival’s main audience.
Corbyn will introduce US rap duo Run the Jewels known for their left-wing lyrics that address social issues. MC Killer Mike, a member of the duo, is a friend and active supporter of American politician Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton’s competitor for the Democratic presidential nomination. The singer endorsed for him during the campaign and threw his support behind Corbyn at his recent London concert, calling on the audience to vote for the Labour Party.
The festival founder, 81-year-old Michael Eavis, says he supports Corbyn’s political views, especially his stance on nuclear disarmament. He also agrees with the politician in what concerns his position against cuts to social care. Both emphasise the importance of supporting education, healthcare, culture and social care.
Corbyn won’t be the only political figure at Glastonbury. Other politicians, mostly left-wing ones, are scheduled to appear on the stage, including shadow chancellor John McDonnell, former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis, and campaigning songwriter Billy Bragg.
The Glastonbury Festival was founded in 1970 by farmer Michael Eavis and takes place at his farm. The festival is mostly known for rock bands’ performances, but it also hosts dance, folklore, theatre, circus and art exhibitions.
Glastonbury attracts more than 170,000 people annually. This year’s festival is held on June 21 – June 25. The lineup includes such world’s top musicians as Radiohead, Foo Fighters, Katy Perry, Ed Sheeran, Liam Gallagher.
