A Chicago-based artist creates mosaics in potholes. His latest piece protests against the 45th president of the US.
Jim Bachor is known for colourful and comical mosaic installations in potholes. For example, his earlier works include mosaics of Cupid, crushed cans, sandwiches, flowers and even a series featuring ice cream. The artist’s new piece, this time with a political message, is installed outside the president’s skyscraper.
The mosaic depicts a Russian flag outlined in gold and overlaid with the word ‘LIAR’. It is Bachor’s first political work, but he announces more political mosaics on his Instagram page.
“Public art reaches hundreds of thousands, starts conversations and provokes thought,” his followers write on social media.
The artist says he created the mosaic to answer his sons when they ask him how he protested against Trump:
“If [my sons] asked if I did anything to protest those dark Trump months he was in office ― I didn’t want my answer to be ‘nothing.’”.
Potholes on roads remain an important problem. Bachor’s previous works were an amazing and unannoying way to draw attention to it. Social problems become more serious under the new administration, so the artist has to get political.
The Russian flag in the artwork by the Chicago-based artist is a reference to Trump’s ties with Russia and the Kremlin’s role in his victory. Numerous sources report that the new US president is controlled by Moscow and has political and business ties with Russia. Trump flatly denies the accusations, while the FBI investigates the role of Russia in the latest presidential election and the new administration’s connections to Moscow.
