The Beguiled has been selected for the main competition section at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
The Beguiled is based on Thomas Culling’s novel of the same name. The film is directed by famous American filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola’s daughter Sofia Coppola. The movie is included in the main competition section at this year’s Cannes Film Festival that takes place in France in May. It is the second screen adaptation of Culling’s book. The first screen version was directed by Don Siegel in 1971, starring Clint Eastwood and Geraldine Page.
The film is set during the Civil War in the US at a girls’ boarding school. Women at the boarding school found a wounded soldier and give him shelter.
As Colin Farrell’s character recovers, students of the school take interest in him. Strict headmistress Martha (Nicole Kidman) is the main antagonist of Farrel’s character. She says the soldier is an unwanted guest at the school and must leave it as soon as he gets better. Strict discipline and sexual tension lead to rivalry and conflicts in attempts to get attention of the only man. Events turn violent.
Besides Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell, the film features Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning. The movie will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May. The world premiere is scheduled for June 23.
