The Latvian National Theatre had to cancel its tour in the United States.

The threatre was to perform at the traditional Latvian Song and Dance Festival in Baltimore, an event organised by American Latvians. The Latvian National Theatre has been a permanent guest of the festival for the last few years. This year, the theatre planned to show the play Homeward Bound.

Theatre actors were denied US visas. The US tour was cancelled, and the festival organisers had to seek someone to replace the Latvian theatre.

“Our efforts to convince the US Department of Homeland Security that the actors should get entry visas have failed this year,” the organisers say.

A number of musicians faced a similar problem in March at the annual festival South by Southwest (SXSW) in Texas. Many explain problems with receiving American visas with the immigration policy conducted by the new US president Donald Trump.

Neither the US Embassy in Latvia nor the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs do not comment on the situation. A Latvian-American San Francisco-based theatre will replace the Latvian National Theatre at the festival. The festival will take place on June 29 – July 3.
