The New York Fashion Week sets a new fashion trend inspired Islamic traditions.
Indonesian designer Anniesa Hasibuan presented her Islamic collection. Muslim models on the runway wore hijabs. However, designs by Hasibuan are made for all women regardless their religion. Her works are based on Muslim traditions – the body and hair are covered by clothes made of silk, satin, brocade and velvet. The Indonesian designer decorated her clothes with pearls and silver and gold embroidery. Hasibuan presented 48 different looks, including everyday clothes and evening gowns. By the way, it was her show during last week’s New York Fashion Week that featured first models wearing hijabs.
Musician Kanye West supported the rising trend with his new collection titled Yeezy Season 5. His show featured model Halima Aden, who walked the runway wearing a hijab. The 19-year-old Muslim model showcased a fur coat from Kanye’s new collection at her first fashion show.
Halima Aden was born in Kenya in a refugee camp. She later moved to the US and now studies at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota. Halima participated in the Miss Minnesota USA pageant, where she wore a hijab and burkini.
A hijab is any piece of clothes covering the head and chest. More often it is a veil that hides the hair but leaves the face open. There are other traditional Islamic clothes that cover the face fully or partially, for example, niqabs and burqas. Some European countries recently banned wearing full-face veils in public places for security reasons.
