Series creators announced the theme for season 4, which can be expected only in two years.
Season 1 of American Crime Story centered on a real-life story of American football star and actor O.J. Simpson. He was accused of murdering his ex-wife and her friend and acquitted. The Simpson case in the mid-1990s became the most publicised criminal trial in the US. The TV project by FX network based on the story was aired in February 2016. It became popular among viewers and won a bunch of awards, including several Emmy and Golden Globe awards in miniseries categories.
Series authors work on seasons 2 and 3 that will focus on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the murder of Gianni Versace respectively. It became known recently that season 4 will center on the sex scandal that led to the impeachment of US president Bill Clinton. It will be based on Jeffrey Toobin’s book A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Story of the Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President. By the way, the acclaimed first season of American Crime Story was also based on Toobin’s book. The writer was deeply involved in the series and served as a consultant to the creators.
The team of producers led by Ryan Murphy are meeting with actresses to play Monica Lewinsky and her colleague Linda Tripp, who secretly recorded Lewinsky’s conversations about her alleged affair with president Clinton. Monica Lewinsky was a White House intern. She claimed she had had sexual relations with the US president from November 1995 to March 1997. Clinton initially denied Lewinsky’s claims, but later had to admit having sexual relations with her. Clinton was impeached on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice, and acquitted.
Other news that came at the same time say that American Crime Story season 2 will be released only in 2018, and season 3 will be aired six months later. The release date for the fourth season focusing on Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky sex scandal hasn’t been set yet, but the premiere shouldn’t be expected until 2019.
Series based on true stories are becoming a trend. A lot of TV networks, studios and streaming services work on similar projects. Besides American Crime Story, other successful shows in this category are HBO’s The Jinx and Netflix’s Making a Murderer. NBC is reported to develop Law & Order spin-off based on actual events.
