Musical La La Land leads the nominations after its triumph at the Golden Globes.

Damien Chazelle’s film received 11 nominations for awards of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. It is followed by Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi drama Arrival and Tom Ford’s psychological thriller Nocturnal Animals with nine nominations each. Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester by the Sea was nominated in six categories. Clint Eastwood’s Sully and Martin Scorsese’s Silence were snubbed, which may come as a surprise.

The list of nominees for the best film award looks eclectic, including brave social-realist drama I, Daniel Blake by Ken Loach, playful musical La La Land by Damien Chazelle’s and Denis Villeneuve’s fantastic story about contacts with aliens Arrival. Other nominees are Manchester by the Sea and Barry Jenkins’s Moonlight.

Denis Villeneuve, Kenneth Lonergan, Ken Loach, Tom Ford and Damien Chazelle will compete for the best director award. Actor categories include Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea), Ryan Gosling (La La Land), Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins), Natalie Portman (Jackie), Hugh Grant (Florence Foster Jenkins) and Nicole Kidman (Lion).

Jacques Audiard and Pascal Caucheteux’s Dheepan, Pedro and Agustín Almodóvar’s Julieta, Deniz Gamze Ergüven and Charles Gillibert’s Mustang, László Nemes and Gábor Sipos’s Son of Saul, Maren Ade and Janine Jackowski’s Toni Erdmann were nominated in the category “Film Not in the English Language”.

The full list of nominees is published on the website of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. The award ceremony hosted by actor, writer and playwright Stephen Fry will be held at London's Royal Albert Hall on February 12.
