About 6,000 Academy members will cast their vote. The nominations will be announced on January 24.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) began to send ballots to voting members to choose nominees for the main film award of the year. About 6,000 Academy members will vote, including actors Will Smith and Salma Hayek, directors Steven Spielberg and Quentin Tarantino, musicians Bruce Springsteen and Elton John.
The voting will run until January 13. Votes will be counted by PricewaterhouseCoopers consulting firm that has been overseeing the process since 1934. Names of the actors and films nominated for the 2016 Oscar Awards will be announced on January 24. The final voting for shortlisted candidates will began on February 13.
As usual, winners will be chosen by members of the corresponding branch. Special committees are established to pick nominees and winners in such categories as Best Documentary Feature, Best Foreign Language Film, Short Film and a number of technical nominations. The only category where all Academy members vote is Best Picture.
The final voting will close on February 21. Accountants will have five days to count the ballots and put the winners’ cards into envelopes that will remain sealed until the 89th Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles on February 26.
