An interview taken by Channel 4 20 years ago shows the blurred face of an artist who was introduced in the video as Banksy.

The identity of, perhaps, the most famous street artists remains unknown for many years, giving causes for numerous hypotheses and speculation around his personality. Researchers used special techniques developed for tracking serial killers to find the truth. Someone claims Banksy is a woman, some say it is a group of street artists. Now media turned attention to a video about the artist shot by Channel 4 in 1995.

The four-minute footage shows a dark-haired man wearing glasses. His face is blurred and facial features can hardly be recognised. In the video, which is titled as Banksy interview, the artist speaks about his works and drawing graffiti in night streets. One of the famous works by the anonymous street artist is shown in the video.

The footage indirectly confirms the theory that Banksy is Bristol-based artist Robin Gunningham. He started as a street artist in his native city and moved to London in 2000. Banksy had his first unofficial exhibition in an abandoned underground station at around that time.

The figure in the video could resemble Massive Attack’s musician Robert Del Naja, who is named by some as Banksy. Del Naja draws graffiti, but he signs his works as 3D and denies being the person behind the street art legend.

Besides a hint at the possible identity of Banksy, the video by Channel 4 takes us to the street art world, showing how Banksy creates his works and art philosophy.
