The German chancellor said at her political party conference to impose a full ban on face-covering clothing.
Angela Merkel, who recently announced her decision to run for another term as chancellor, said at the conference of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) wearing face-covering veils in the country should be banned.
“The full-face veil should be forbidden wherever legally possible,” the German chancellor said.
One of Merkel’s closest allies, interior minister Thomas de Maizière, proposed a burqa ban back in August. He thinks the full-face veil must be forbidden in all places where social cohesion is required. The ban may be applied to government buildings, schools, universities, courts and mass events. The measure is explained by security reasons.
The proposal to ban face-covering clothing, which mainly refers to traditional Muslim burqas and niqabs, was actively supported by party members.
The Dutch parliament voted last week for a partial ban on face-covering clothing.
