The BBC unveiled a trailer for the fourth, and probably the last, season of the popular detective drama.

The dynamic and rather confused video shows the characters we know from previous episodes: Sherlock Holmes, his brother Mycroft, John Watson, Mary Morstan, Mrs Hudson and of course Jim Moriarty. Actually, season three ended with the antihero’s sudden return from the dead, and it is the beginning of the trailer for the fourth season.

“Did you miss me?” Moriarty says, and Sherlock asks himself if it is really he and what it may mean. The ominous trailer promises that everything the main characters know “will be tested”. Everyone they know is in danger. The video is action-packed and full of explosions, and Sherlock even shoots a gun and gets into a fight.

The trailer was shown at San Diego Comic-Con on Sunday. Series co-creator Mark Gatiss, who also plays Mycroft Holmes, said season four would be the darkest one. Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays the detective, hinted at some tragic events in the new season. “It's a genuine emotional roller coaster… But there are quite a few tears,” the actor said.

The last episode of season three was released almost three years ago. At the beginning of 2016, the series authors prepared a present for fans – The Abominable Bride special, with Benedict Cumberbatch’s and Martin Freeman’s characters placed in Victorian England from the original stories by Arthur Conan Doyle. If you want to see the developments in the present-day setting, you’ll have to wait until the next year. The BBC is going to release the new season on January 1, 2017. The series writer Steven Moffat said earlier the new season would probably be the last.
