Dealers criticise TEFAF art fair in Maastricht for not cancelling the event, which led to dozens of positive cases of coronavirus among participants, Artguide learnt from artnet.
The TEFAF fair was closed four days earlier after one of the dealers tested positive for coronavirus, but the decision came too late: at least 25 positive cases among visitors and participants were registered.
The organisers are criticised for opening the fair despite the coronavirus outbreak. Boedy Lilian of the Amsterdam and Geneva-based gallery Salomon Lilian, who tested positive, said the decision to hold the fair was “irresponsible of TEFAF”.
A representative of TEFAF said the situation was unique and noted the organisers “had no crystal ball to anticipate the world we are facing today”.
“Based on the facts and the health advice we had, we made decisions solely based on the health advice given by the authorities every day,” he said.
The fair attracted some 28 500 visitors in seven days.
