The anonymous letter urges Germany to stop financing the Berlin-based Jewish Museum and other “anti-Israeli” institutions. The letter was sent to the office of Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Federal Development Ministry. The authors remain unknown, but it is suspected that it was sent by Israeli government officials, Artforum reports.

The letter calls the exhibition Welcome to Jerusalem at the Jewish Museum a “Muslim-Palestinian” slant and criticises the museum for hosting “regularly occurring events and discussions with prominent supports of the Boycott, Divest, Sanction (BDS) movement”.

The “anti-Israeli” list also includes the Berlinale Film Festival, the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation, Women Wage for Peace and the Catholic Relief Services, according to Die Tageszeitung. The list also names 972 magazines that criticise the Israeli government and accuse them of apartheid.

The office of the Israeli PM did not confirmed it sent the letter but told the newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth: “The prime minister has pointed out to various world leaders the issue of funding Israeli and Palestinian NGOs, which portray Israeli soldiers as war criminals, support Palestinian terrorism and call for the boycott of the State of Israel. Israel will continue fighting these organizations.”

Israel’s Ministry of Strategic Affairs also says it did not write the letter.
