The hashtag went viral last month as women began to share their stories of sexual harassment and assault in the media and art world.

Multimedia artist Erin Gallagher visualises Twitter conversations. She gets inspiration from stories in the news, which gives her works a political dimension.

The artist said in an interview with artnet.com that she didn’t expect the result would be so huge: “The network froze my computer several times just trying to make preliminary visualizations. I’ve never seen a network so dense before. I thought I made a mistake and re-checked my work several times to be sure it wasn’t an error.”

The first visual visualisation showed at least 24,722 tweets with the hashtag #MeToo.

“My primary motivation was to see if I could make a visual representation of a digital conversation—I didn’t really think of them as art,” the artist said, adding that she already received requests to sell her visualisations as prints. “They’re pretty to look at, but the context that I provide gives it depth.”
