Silya Ziani sings about Amazigh (Berber) activism.. She is one of the most recognizable figures of the Hirak Rif movement and participant of the protests in northern Morocco that have been lasting since last October.
Arrested in June, she launched a hunger strike a week ago. Ziani says her protest will be held indefinitely. She and other detainees protest against cruel prison conditions in Casablanca. Initially, it was a short three-day hunger strike, but Ziani said on July 15 she would held her hunger strike until her demands were fulfilled.
According to the singer’s sister, who visited her in prison, Silya Ziani is determined to continue her hunger strike “to the death”. The musician refuses food and water, the Voice Project reports.
Protests in Morocco’s Berber-populated Rif region began on October 28, 2016. Demonstrators protest against corruption, police brutality, government inaction, abductions of arrests of activists and unemployment. Protesters make social and political demands. The protests were supported by many cultural figures, who also face repression from the government.
