The magazine has published its traditional list of the world’s most influential people. It includes a lot of artists and cultural figures.
Time releases annual lists of the most influential people in the world. The first list, published in 1999, was a result of a debate among American academics, politicians and journalists on who makes the biggest impacts on the world and society.
Being included in the list is a great honour, but the magazine’s editors stress that both positive and negative influence on the world is counted. Candidates are nominated by the magazine’s staff and former members of Time 100. One out of 100 people is chosen by the general public in the readers’ poll. The final list is composed by Time’s editors.
The magazine recognises the special role artists play in society, its vision and development, giving them one out of five categories on the list. A lot of actors, writers, designers, artists and other creative people are included in the icons category, which honours bright public figures, and the pioneers category. The rest two categories are for politicians, businessmen, scientists and sportsmen.
One third of this year’s list is occupied by artists and cultural figures, among them actresses Viola Davis, Sarah Paulson and Emma Stone, musicians Chance the Rapper, Alicia Keys and Ed Sheeran, filmmakers Barry Jenkins and Ava DuVernay, writers Margaret Atwood and Colson Whitehead. The list of 100 most influential people also includes fashion designers Raf Simons and Alessandro Michele, model Ashley Graham, architect David Adjaye, artist Kerry James Marshall and others. The full list is available on Time’s website.
