The photoshoot of Valentina Sampaio honours transgender beauty and helps fight prejudice.
Vogue’s next issue cover will feature 19-year-old Brazilian model and actress Valentina Sampaio. Emmanuelle Alt wrote in her editorial column the transgender model is strikingly beautiful and worth appearing on the magazine’s cover. The editor-in-chief says that Sampaio is the absolute equal of other models though she was born a boy.
“Valentina is on the cover of Vogue this month, not just for her looks or her sparkling personality, but because despite herself she embodies an age-old arduous struggle to be recognized and not to be perceived as something Other, a gender exile,” Emmanuelle Alt wrote.
The magazine notes that Valentina Sampaio’s success and beauty have a long struggle of transgender people for recognition behind them. Vodue’s editor-in-chief says that the battle is won only when a transgendered person on the front cover of a fashion magazine won’t require an editorial on the subject.
Vogue is a fashion magazine founded in 1920. Its covers featured world-known models Kate Moss, Heidi Klum, Linda Evangelista, Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford, Natalia Vodianova.
Vogue is not the first magazine to put a transgender model on its cover. Valentina Sampaio also appeared in Elle, which earlier had transgender model Hari Nef on its cover.
